Qline Construction has completed a landmark restoration of No. 6 Stinsford House, the birthplace of renowned author Thomas Hardy, transforming the once-derelict section of the Grade II listed 18th-century property into a structurally sound and beautifully renovated home.
Located in the heart of Hardy Country, Stinsford House is an architectural and cultural gem, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It’s famously associated with Hardy’s early life and final resting place—his heart is buried at the adjacent churchyard. However, in recent years, parts of the property had fallen into serious disrepair.
No. 6 had become structurally unsound, with significant sections of the original structure collapsing. Qline took on the complex and delicate task of restoring the property while preserving its heritage. The project included a complete internal and roof strip-out, the installation of a robust new steel framework, and extensive masonry repairs using traditional lime mortar and carefully sourced reclaimed bricks to maintain historical authenticity.
A standout feature of the renovation is a newly added loft space, comprising two bedrooms and a bathroom, seamlessly integrated into the existing structure. The project team retained the original, oversized oak trusses, which now frame the loft with rustic character and grandeur.
“Our goal was to restore this important piece of history with the respect it deserves while ensuring it stands strong for future generations,” said a QLine spokesperson. “The result is a stunning blend of historic charm and modern comfort, achieved with meticulous craftsmanship and a deep commitment to heritage preservation.”
This restoration not only safeguards a significant part of England’s literary history but also exemplifies how modern construction techniques can harmonize with traditional architecture to breathe new life into treasured buildings.
